This is incorrect, for this reason:
Rule Number One of expanding one's comedy audience is that when you ridicule someone --even in their absence-- they very quickly hear about it and will join your audience. They want to know precisely how they are being ridiculed.
Their enemies will take great delight in seeing your target destroyed, and they will join your audience, too.
